Greece Gets 2 Silvers in EU Meet

first_imgPRAGUE – Two Greek athletes won silver medals in the final day of the European Indoor Track & Field Championships.Antonis Mastoras was second in the high jump while Katerina Stefanidi was the runner-up in the women’s pole vault competition.Mastoras cleared a personal best 2.31 meters to finish in a second-place tie with Italy’s Silvano Chesani in the final, behind winner Daniyil Tsyplakov from Russia. Mastoras did better than was expected, giving Greece a boost at the games.Stefanidi is always a favorite to win and performed well, coming close to her personal best of 4.77 meters, clearing 4.75 meters, behind only Russia’s Anzhelika Sidorova, who soared over 4.8 meters.Stefanidi to win gold right with a bold gamble, taking a shot at 4.85 meters but failing.  Greek record holder Nicole Kyriakopoulou was a disappointment at fifth, jumping only 4.5 meters after having a few days earlier going 4.8 meters.Greece finished with two silver medals, plus a fourth place, two fifths and a sixth spot after being unable to fund its national team sufficiently because of an ongoing economic crisis.TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more
