No remedy if someone set on blaming outfits: UP CM

first_imgFaced with the charge of right-wing activists repeatedly taking the law into their own hands in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday said there is “no remedy if someone makes up his mind” to blame a particular outfit.Mr. Adityanath was responding to questions by reporters about the lynching of a Muslim man in Bulandshahr that was allegedly carried out by Hindu Yuva Vahini (HYV) activists, and the Saharanpur clash in which an MP and a senior police official were injured.Mr. Adityanath founded HYV in April 2002.‘No discrimination’The CM was also asked why his warnings on the law-and-order front are not having the desired impact.“There is no remedy if someone makes up his mind that he has to blame a particular outfit… The victims have already stated that not one outfit but dispute among themselves was the cause of the incidents,” the CM said.“I can say with confidence that everyone will be safe in the State without any discrimination and rule of law is the priority of the government,” he said.In Saharanpur, local MP Raghav Lakhanpal Sharma, a senior police officer and several others were injured in stone pelting between members of two communities during a rally on April 20 to mark Ambedkar Jayanti. In Sohi village of Bulandshahr, a man was beaten to death by right-wing activists on May 2 after an inter-faith couple eloped. On Thursday, UP police’s press statement said that HYV activists were allegedly involved in the lynching incident.Regretting the State’s poor ranking in the ‘Swachh Survekshan-2017’, with only Varanasi figuring in the list of 100 clean cities, Mr. Adityanath said that nine of the 15 most dirty districts are in Uttar Pradesh.last_img read more

Chris Paul to Sign 107Million Contract With Cliippers

The Los Angeles Clippers hit the jackpot by acquiring Chris Paul, and, in turn, Paul has hit the  literal jackpot with the Clippers. With NBA free-agent season underway, Paul is expected to sign a five-year extension that will pay him $107 million to stay in LA.Many teams, including the Atlanta Hawks, were hoping to make a play to lure Paul away from the Clippers. Defense confident without Coleman

Ohio State’s Big Ten season started favorably with a convincing 30-0 thrashing of Illinois on Saturday. The Buckeyes’ first conference test went smoothly despite unfavorable weather conditions.“I thought our guys did a good job of focusing on the task at hand, the Big Ten beginning,” coach Jim Tressel said at his weekly press conference. “We had a couple mistakes with the football, but for the most part I thought we did a good job of handling a game type that we hadn’t been in in quite some time.”The last time the Illini visited The Horseshoe they played the role of spoiler, as they defeated the then-ranked No. 1 Buckeyes 28-21. However, there would be no upset this season as the Bucks held their opponent scoreless for the second consecutive week, posting back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1996.“Obviously our defense sets the tone,” Tressel said. “Even if the opposing team starts a couple first downs and so forth, they don’t panic. They just keep playing, come up to the play.”The score might have been decisive over Illinois, but Tressel doesn’t believe his team played mistake-free football in its first conference win. Only three players on offense and five on defense were graded as having “winning performances” by the coaching staff.“We enjoyed the decisiveness of the score, and the fact that it was a shutout was something you take tremendous pride in as a defensive football team, but we’ve obviously got a lot of work to do,” Tressel said.Although the Buckeyes (3-1, 1-0) were considered visitors when they traveled to Cleveland to play Toledo, they now prepare for their first real road test against Indiana (3-1, 1-0) Saturday night.Senior safety Kurt Coleman outSenior captain Kurt Coleman has been suspended by the Big Ten for Saturday’s game against Indiana after a late “helmet-to-helmet” hit on Illinois backup quarterback Eddie Mcgee. The suspension was handed down Monday by Big Ten officials. A joint statement was released following the suspension by athletic director Gene Smith and coach Jim Tressel that showed displeasure with the ruling. Losing a three-year starter and captain is never easy, but the Buckeyes will try to move forward despite losing their defensive leader.“Well, you can never look at losing a player as something that stops you in your tracks because guys sprain ankles, they twist knees, they pull hamstrings, they hurt elbows,” Tressel said. “You better have been getting ready the next guy at any position. So do you like losing guys? No. I think we’ve been pretty fortunate.”Tressel said Coleman took the decision like a man and will move forward. Anderson Russell and Jermale Hines will play at the safety spots this week. Sophomore Ohrian Johnson has also seen time at safety and should see more action in Coleman’s absence.Buckeyes’ stout defense vs. Indiana’s high-powered offenseThe Buckeyes’ defense had another strong performance against Illinois, forcing three turnovers and holding the Illini to 170 yards of total offense. After its second shutout, OSU turns its attention to Indiana and a Hoosiers offense that put up 467 yards against Michigan last week. After two solid defensive outings, the Buckeyes are preparing to be tested again.“Obviously they watch TV. They watch the highlights,” Tressel said of his team’s awareness of Indiana’s offense. “They see the facts and figures, and they saw that Indiana had every opportunity to win thier Big Ten opener and put up a lot of yards and made a lot of plays, so our guys went to work on that.”After struggling with Navy the first game of the season, the defense has been the strong point of the team thus far, and their success can be attributed to several factors.“I think it starts with good personnel. There’s no doubt about it,” Tressel said. “We have some veterans who have been there and grown and so forth. We have a little bit of depth, such that we can play 15 or 16 or 17 guys a week, but they prepare awfully hard.”Shotgun offense and running game spell successOSU’s offense looked a little different in the rain on Saturday, as most of its plays were run out of the shotgun. The Buckeyes used more spread formations and a formidable running game to control the clock for the win, despite having no passing yards in the first half. Running back tandem of Daniel “Boom” Herron and Brandon Saine, along with quarterback Terrelle Pryor’s rushing ability, accounted for 236 yards on the ground in what might be the Buckeyes’ new style of offense.“I think if you’re a defense, you’re a little more concerned about the quarterback as a runner when he’s in the shotgun, as opposed to having to go backward to run forward,” Tressel said. “The downside to the shotgun quite obviously is that when I’m under center I can have my eyes on those safeties all the time, and I know how they’re spinning their coverage, and I can get my post-snap reads.” OSU’s success on the ground will also open up its passing game, which has not been up to Tressel’s standards yet.“We haven’t completed as many passes, period, as I’d like to complete,” he said. read more

Ivan Rakitic says his wife predicted hed win the day for

first_imgCroatia midfielder Ivan Rakitic has told reporters that his wife predicted he would be decisive in their last 16 match against Denmark.Rakitic scored the winning penalty against Denmark after the match ended 1-1 following normal time and an extra 30 minute period. During a tense shootout, Croatia keeper Danijel Subasic saved 3 penalties to Kasper Schmeichel’s 2 in Denmark’s goal, before the Barcelona star stepped up to win the game.“This was one of the most emotional games in my career,” Rakitic said post-match, as the BBC reports.“As I was preparing for this last penalty, I was thinking only about my wife and my daughters.”“She told me I would be the one who would decide it in the end.”A dramatic tie in Nizhny Novgorod saw both teams cancel each other out for large periods, despite Croatia being strong favourites pre-match. Denmark gave everything and in Schmeichel they had a goalkeeper playing at the top of his game, even stopping a Luka Modric penalty in the second half of extra time.Modric made amends in the shootout, calmly dispatching his penalty to keep Croatia in the driver’s seat and his teammate Rakitic was quick to praise the Real Madrid star.Euro 2020Euro 2020 Qualifiers Betting: 06/09/19 Stuart Heath – September 6, 2019 With the international break in full-swing, here at Ronaldo.com we are going to take a look at Thursday’s Euro 2020 qualifiers match-betting odds. With a…“If Robert Prosinecki says that Luka Modric is the best player in the history of Croatia, then it is so,” he said.“There is no-one in Croatia who is better understood in football than he is.”“But Luka Modric is not only great in the field, he is a great person as well. Whitecaps urged to spend on talent by MLS commissioner Don Garber

first_imgMajor League Soccer commissioner Don Garber had some advice for The Vancouver Whitecaps that sold the teenaged Alphonso Davies to Bayern Munich in a deal last July that could reach US $22 million. At the State of the League address obtained from Vancouversun a day before Saturday’s MLS Cup clash between Atlanta FC and the Portland Timbers, Garber said“Greg Kerfoot and his colleagues need to use the money to bring in someone who is as exciting as Alphonso.”“It’s not quite a warning shot, but more along the lines of opening your jacket to show off your holster. The meaning is clear: It’s time for the team to get its house in order.”RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich, Robert LewadowskiMatch Preview: RB Leipzig vs Bayern Munich Boro Tanchev – September 14, 2019 RB Leipzig will have the chance to prove their title-winning capabilities when they host Bayern Munich today at 18:30 (CET).“We have been buying for so long, and then as we’ve gone through the analysis, it’s hard to justify that investment and the investment that we have to make in player development,” Garber said.“We’ve got to have something that turns this model around, or else it’s going to be unsustainable.”The Whitecaps, for their part, have vowed to spend big-ticket money to bring in difference-making players this season, and the hiring of coach Marc Dos Santos has resonated positively with a fan base hungry for success like their Cascadia Cup foes.”last_img read more

Getty Images Actress Gwyneth Paltrow is bringing Goop to Netflix. The Avengers: Endgame star signed a deal with Netflix in which her Goop lifestyle brand will produce a 30-minute docuseries focused on wellness, Variety first reported Monday and CNET later confirmed. The show, set to debut in the fall, will be co-hosted by both Paltrow and Goop Chief Content Officer Elise Loehnen.Loehnen told Variety that they chose Netflix for the show because Netflix’s core audience is definitely watching content on the service, and the service can provide the type of production budget Goop is seeking for its stories.”Some of the more strategic, bigger stories we want to tell require a TV budget. Obviously, there’s no better partner in that,” Loehnen said regarding the deal. A team of 20 will produce the program, which plans to tackle mental, physical and sexual health topics.Loehnen reportedly said Paltrow plans to ensure the show represents the Goop brand, calling it the actress’s next “white space.” Goop sells and writes about beauty, home, fashion and wellness products, seemingly from a holistic point of view.”With this show, I think she’s only really interested in opportunities where we can uniquely be ourselves and do things potentially disruptive,” she told Variety. In order to focus on the show, Goop also plans to pause production on its quarterly print magazine, which will resume after the show arrives to Netflix. The deal is the latest high-profile signing for Netflix, which in the past year has included grabs like a content deal with Barack and Michelle Obama, the continuation of a deal that keeps Friends on the service through 2019 and an agreement that put Taylor Swift’s Reputation concert on the service at the end of 2018. And Netflix is increasing prices in the US this year, since new subscribers are still signing up like crazy.First published at 10:37 a.m. PT.Update 2:59 p.m. PT: Adds confirmation from Goop.last_img read more

Holidaymakers sufferings BNP demands Quaders removal

first_imgRuhul Kabir RizviBangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Saturday demanded resignation of road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader for his ‘failure’ to ensure smooth journeys for holidaymakers ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.”The sufferings the home-goers facing are indescribable. The minister [Quader] has utterly failed… we think he is mainly responsible for the public sufferings, and he should step down,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed. He came up with remarks at a press conference at BNP’s Naya Paltan central office. The BNP leader said people are going through immense sufferings on their way to home due to rundown highways, mismanagement, exorbitant transport fares and unabated extortion on roads.Referring to Quader’s comment that people are going home smoothly without facing any tailback, Rizvi said the minister made the remark to hide his failures.”He also mocked the sufferers with his comment. We think he’s resorting to such falsehood only to protect his cabinet membership by appeasing the prime minister.”He alleged that the government has continued repression on BNP leaders and activists by implicating them in ‘false and fabricated’ cases. “Many of our leaders and activists have long been on the run to avoid harassment and repressive acts. They can’t return their home even on the occasion Eid.”The BNP leader criticised prime minister Sheikh Hasina for repeatedly seeking vote for her party enjoying government facilities. “The prime minister again sought vote for her party yesterday [Friday]. Seeking vote for a party holding the important post of prime minister is a complete violation of the election code of conduct.”He alleged that the prime minister has been begging votes desperately as she has realised that people will not cast their votes for Bangladesh Awami League for snatching their voting rights.Rizvi Ahmed also said the AL leaders and activists have got scared realising that they will suffer a massive debacle in the next polls.last_img read more

Galveston May Cut Some Bus Service Due to Funding Issues

first_img Share Gail Delaughter Island Transit buses in downtown Galveston.Like a lot of public transportation systems, Galveston’s Island Transit depends heavily on federal support. But the community lost population after Hurricane Ike, so that means fewer dollars from Washington. Galveston Assistant City Manager Rick Beverlin says it costs over $4 million a year to run Island Transit. That leaves local government to make up the difference. “We are up to in the budget approximately $800,000 on paper,” explains Beverlin. “But in reality at the end of the year they’re putting it over a million dollars.”   To keep Island Transit afloat, Galveston is thinking about changing its night and weekend service. Instead of the current routes officials are considering a circulator bus. Beverlin says they’re also looking at subsidized taxi service for disabled riders.“This is a preemptive planning exercise to make sure that we don’t have any big surprises when we get to the next fiscal year,” adds Beverlin. Galveston transit riders can learn more about the proposed changes at a public meeting Wednesday afternoon. It’s from 4:00 to 6:00 PM in the Galveston City Council Chambers. Season Preview Cards Open New Era Under Coach Holly Aprile

first_img“I think that we have some people that will move around to different positions, so we’re not necessarily deep at any particular field position,” said Aprile. “I do think that we have some versatility to be able to play some people at different places, so that’s a positive. The competition has been great. We have a lot of people that can fit different roles and embrace that and buy into it. Like any team, it will be important that we stay healthy, especially on the pitching mound, we need to be able to keep our people healthy there and we’ll manage that throughout the season.” Sophomore Danielle Watson (Osceola, Ind.) will look to pick up where she left off after gaining a year of experience as a starter. During her rookie season, Watson collected 14 wins and posted a 3.13 earned run average while striking out 105 batters in 129.2 innings of work. Redshirt senior Sidney Melton (Columbus, Ohio) brings a great deal of experience to the infield and could see time at third base or shortstop. The 2018 all-ACC honoree led the Cardinals with 45 runs and 54 hits, stood second on the team with 15 stolen bases and finished her junior year with a .329 batting average, placing her third on the team. “The team dynamic has been good and I think we’ve all adapted well to the new coaching staff,” said senior Megan Hensley at UofL’s spring sports media day. “We’ve all been coming together as a team. You can definitely see the progress from the early fall to now and I think we’re ready for the season.” Fellow sophomore Kyra Snyder (Lake Forest, Calif.) will bring more depth to the pitching rotation. Last year, she made 16 appearances, most of them in relief and posted a 3.07 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 27.1 innings. ScheduleThe Cardinals will take on a tough 2019 slate which includes a total of 17 games against teams that qualified for the 2018 NCAA Tournament – including national champion Florida State. UofL will also face five opponents ranked among the preseason top 25 and four receiving votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball and USA Today/NFCA polls. InfieldersThe Cardinals return a bevy of infielders from last season. Snyder played in all 52 games with 51 starts either at first base or pitcher last season while fellow sophomore Madison Ciaccio also saw a great deal of time at first base and fielded the position well. Aprile has been pleased with the team as a whole, both on and off the field.   “I’ve been talking them a lot about some intangible things. I think that we have a ton of talent on the field. Now bringing that talent together, being able to communicate well, being able to handle adversity – and we know that’s coming – so when the first thing doesn’t go right, how are we going to handle that together as a team. Those are the things that we’ve been working on mentally and being able to put that together with our physical skills.” OutfieldersJunior Celene Funke (Carmel, Ind.) will anchor a young outfield that includes at least three underclassmen at the start of the season. The speedy outfield had a breakthrough season in 2018, leading the team with a .356 batting average and 17 stolen bases. Looking aheadThe Cards are coming off of a 33-20 campaign in 2018. Back from that team are 14 letterwinners and six starters as well as five pitchers. Louisville also welcomes the addition of five freshmen and one redshirt freshman to the 2019 roster. The corps of outfielders also includes sophomores Jordyn Wolfe (South Elgin, Ill.) saw time in 27 games with 11 starts and Riley Schindler (Borden, Ind.) also played in 17 games. Freshman Charley Butler will also compete for a starting role after a strong performance in the fall season. “I think we will pitch the ball well. We do have some depth in the pitching staff and I’m excited about that.  We’re also returning of the top offensive production in the conference, so I think we’ll be able to put those things together. I always think that pitching and defense go directly together, so that’s been something we’ve really focused on with point of emphasis on communication.” The transition began in the fall when the team – a balanced mix of veterans and underclassmen –became acquainted with the new coaching staff and began to learn a new system which produced wins against Eastern Kentucky, Indiana, Morehead State, Western Kentucky and Kentucky. Prior to joining the Cardinals, the 2018 ACC Coach of the Year spent 10 seasons (2009-18) as Pittsburgh’s head coach and five years (2004-08) as an assistant. In 2018, she earned ACC Coach of the Year honors after leading the Panthers to the 2018 ACC Coastal Division title and a runner-up finish in the conference tournament. Darrianne Hale (Mesquite, Texas) also returns to the circle for her final season. The senior transferred to Louisville last year from Butler Community College and helped contribute on the mound after rehabbing from an injury she sustained in the offseason. Story Linkscenter_img Second base will likely be anchored by Maddy Newman, who is coming off of an impressive rookie campaign in which she earned ACC all-freshman team honors. The speedy left-handed hitter posted a .315 batting average and scored 22 runs with eight stolen bases. The Cardinals could also look to freshman Erin Wilbur (Sugar Hill, Ga.) to bring depth to the position. Paige Schindler rounds out the sophomore class of pitchers. The Borden, Ind., native gained valuable experience in last season and in the fall and is ready to contribute to the Cardinals’ success on the mound. Freshman Cassady Greenwood (Birmingham, Ala.) will add to the Cardinals depth and turned in impressive results in the fall and early spring practices. Fellow freshman Rebecca Chung was recovering from by injury in the fall, but will also look to contribute behind the plate. The University of Louisville softball team will officially open a new era with head coach Holly Aprile at the helm when the Cardinals travel to Fullerton, California for the Titan Classic this weekend. As Louisville softball enters its 20th season, Aprile looks continue the tradition of success and elevate the program to new heights. “We have been working hard at a lot of different things,” said Aprile. “We’re to have a great group of returners and a strong nucleus of leadership which helped us out in the fall and with the new staff.” CatchersFollowing the graduation of three-year starter Jenna Jordan, the Cardinals will have several options to complete the battery in 2019. Senior Madison Cousineau (Franklin, N.C.) will bring veteran leadership to the position after playing in 23 games with five starts last year following her transfer from Mississippi State. She finished her junior season with a .323 batting average, two doubles a home run and seven RBIs. Louisville’s pitching staff will count on senior Megan Hensley (Ashland, Ky.) to help lead the way. The two-time NFCA all-Southeast Region and all-ACC selection enters her final season ranked among the Cardinals’ top-10 in career wins, strikeouts, saves and games started and finished. She has also been vital to Louisville’s offensive production and stands in the top 10 in career RBI, home runs and grand slams. PitchersThe 2019 roster features a great deal of depth in the circle with five returners combined with the addition of redshirt freshman Taylor Roby. Roby joins the rotation after taking a redshirt season in 2018. The Mt. Washington, Ky. native brings a stellar resume, earning Metro Louisville Player as well as Sixth Region Player of the Year honors in high school. Junior Caitlin Ferguson (Versailles, Ky.) is coming off of an solid sophomore year which culminated in NFCA all-Southeast Region honors. While splitting time between third base and shortstop, she posted a .317 batting average and stood second on the team with 40 RBIs. “We’re really excited about our schedule,” said Aprile. “It is challenging, but we’re really looking forward to that. I think some of the teams that we’re going to play early on will really set us up for success moving into the ACC.” Louisville’s preseason-ranked opponents include No. 1/3 Florida State, No. 8/8 Tennessee, No. 13/15 Kentucky, No. 17/17 Auburn and No. 19/14 Michigan. Notre Dame, Northwestern, Cal State Fullerton and Missouri are all receiving votes.  Print Friendly Version Aprile brought with her a dedicated and talented group of staff members in assistant coaches Griffin Joiner, who worked with her at Pitt, and Ashley Lane who was previously at Middle Tennessee State. Both Joiner and Lane bring impressive resumes as coaches and as members of Women’s College World Series teams at Kentucky and Michigan respectively.  last_img read more
