DALLAS, TX – OCTOBER 14: Head coach Tom Herman of the Texas Longhorns blows a bubble during warmups before the game against the Oklahoma Sooners at Cotton Bowl on October 14, 2017 in Dallas, Texas. (Photo by Richard W. Rodriguez/Getty Images)Last season, Tom Herman’s tenure at Texas began with a 51-41 home loss to Maryland. The Longhorns entered the season ranked, and improvement was expected. And then they lost to those same Terrapins, who have a suspended head coach and are embroiled in scandal, 34-29 at FedExField in Landover, Md.It certainly didn’t look like Texas took the leap that many expected under Herman, especially with a full year under his belt in Austin. The head coach wasn’t hearing it though. After the game, he wasn’t willing to acknowledge the comparisons between last year’s Maryland loss and this year’s. From Austin American-Statesman writer Brian Davis:“A lot of people are going to want to say this feels a lot like last year. It doesn’t to me.”Tom Herman said that this year’s Texas football team is “better now than at any point last year,” according to Davis. That isn’t sticking well with Texas fans, who clearly expected a big revenge win over the Terrapins.ESPN’s Bomani Jones, a Longhorns fan, was among those that isn’t amused with Herman’s quote.he’d do himself more favors by taking these losses on the chin instead of trying to explain to people why they didn’t see what they just saw. https://t.co/0sFPZCfWCg— El Flaco (@bomani_jones) September 1, 2018so i’ll say it slower, cuz i just don’t see how this is hard to understand. if your response is “well maryland is just better,” you’ve identified the problem. right there. it’s directly in front of you.— El Flaco (@bomani_jones) September 1, 2018Bomani isn’t alone either.Game clinching interceptions feel A LOT like last year.— Bill Burrell (@BillBurrell68) September 1, 2018Did they beat Maryland last year? No. Same as this year. So it feels exactly like last year.— Trevor Smith (@TSmith0952) September 1, 2018What’s he smoking. We got rid of Charlie Strong for this….I’m just saying. I do not see much of any improvement. Talk is cheap. Actions speak louder than words. ?— David Wheeler (@DWheels2006) September 1, 2018It sure as shit feels the same to me. 85 points surrendered by this “stout” defense and offenses that can’t get rolling until the second half and second quarter respectively. All while Maryland got off to fast starts both years? Yeah…feels the same to me.— DILLIGAF? (@Getitrite1) September 1, 2018This one game won’t define Herman’s tenure if he gets things turned around, and he’s not near the hot seat yet. It is fair to say that the honeymoon is over for the former Houston head coach, though.
